Minako Jean McMillin (born October 31, 1989), known professionally as Mina McMillin, is an American actress who has provided voices for English dubbed anime and video games. Some of her voice roles include Emily in Until Dawn, Sasha Braus in Attack on Titan, Silica / Keiko Ayano in Sword Art Online, and Gaige in Borderlands 2. On screen, she is best known for her upcoming role of Tatsu Yamashiro / Katana in the 2016 superhero film Suicide Squad.
early life
McMillin was born and raised in San Francisco, California. Her mother works in finance and her father is an oral surgeon. She has one older brother. She is of Japanese descent on her mother's side and Irish, Scottish, and German on her father's. In 2011, McMillin graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology and Neurobiology emphasis.
career
In April of 2010, McMillin submitted a video audition to an open casting call for the film Project X. After several more auditions, McMillin, who had no prior interest in pursuing acting as a career, was cast as JB's Girl. She then hired an agent and began auditioning for more projects.
After graduating from college, McMillin moved to Los Angeles, where she quickly found work as a voice actress. Her first credited roles were minor roles in the English language version of Squid Girl, released in the US in 2011. On why she wanted to do voiceover work, she has said: "Because I was still new to Hollywood and wanted to work as much as I could and I sound like a Muppet." She has primarily lent her voice to anime series dubbed by Bang! Zoom Entertainment and Funimation but has also worked on North American-produced video games such as Until Dawn and Borderlands 2.
McMillin also continues to work on live action projects. She has guest starred on television shows such as The Fosters, Teen Wolf, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine and appears in a recurring role on Shameless. She has also collaborated on web series and shorts with YouTubers, including Wong Fu Productions, Justin Chon, and RocketJump, as well as produced and starred in her own web shorts, Kiko in America and Gerardo's. Her involvement in online media has lead to work in film; in 2015, she appeared in Man Up and Everything Before Us, independent feature films by Chon and Wong Fu, respectively.
In March 2015, McMillin was announced as joining the cast of the upcoming DC Comics film Suicide Squad. She was later revealed to be playing Tatsu Yamashiro / Katana. Suicide Squad marks McMillin's first large studio film role.

facts
★ sansei through her mother. fluent in japanese.
★ owns a dog named panini, whom she essentially treats like an actual human son.
★ her stage name (undertaken at the urging of her agent to make her sound less blatantly japanese) is a nickname she actually goes by. she almost chose her middle name, jean, but it felt too weird and unnatural.
★ other nicknames include mini, minz, mj, mcmillz (her social media handle), etc.
★ got started in the industry on a complete whim, via sending in a video audition to an open casting call for project x. she and some friends did it mostly for fun and, given that her prior experience with acting amounted to minor/chorus roles in her high school's musicals and participation in her college's improv club, she didn't expect to actually get cast at all.
★ graduated from uc berkeley with a degree in molecular and cell biology, emphasis in neurobiology in the spring of 2011. planned to look into med school after, but instead moved to la to pursue acting.
★ though not entirely unsupportive of her decision to act, her fairly well-off parents were initially apprehensive when she moved to la and gave up the stable and lucrative neuroscience for the decidely more unpredictable acting. truthfully, they still were up until she got cast in suicide squad.
★ did a significant amount of baby-, pet-, housesitting, dogwalking, editing student essays, cleaning and organizing, etc in her first year of living in la before she felt either comfortable enough or fed up enough to quit doing them.
★ her agent immediately suggested looking into voice acting due to her cartoon character-esque speaking voice. pursued it more seriously upon realizing that hollywood wasn't as glamorous as it was cracked up to be and that live action acting roles were difficult to come by.
★ has two tattoos (an orange sailor venus symbol on her right wrist and "skwad" on her left foot) and a nose piercing that she's sometimes advised not to wear, at which she turns into the shrug emoticon.
★ heavy social media user and has been known to go on long twitter rants criticizing the negative aspects of hollywood and the entertainment industry.
★ has directed, written, produced and starred in two web shorts. hopes to make more because she finds the process and freedom of writing whatever she wants to be liberating.
★ has a youtube channel that she only updates very intermittenly. among the videos on it are her shorts, a few q&a's, and random vlogs.
★ participated in a slew of extracurriculars at various points during her adolesence, including but not limited to: piano (she subsequently taught herself guitar as a weird emo teenager), several forms of dance, karate, and cheerleading.
media perception
depending on who's asked, mina broke out into the industry with a fairly promising media presence. that is to say, she played a hot girl in a hit teen movie and subsequently had a maxim feature to promote it. she quickly fell off the media's and general public's radar, if she was ever really on it, as booking more roles didn't come easy. instead, most of her attention over the years has come from anime and video game fans, thanks to building up her voiceover resume and attending conventions as a guest. she's also garnered a little buzz for her suicide squad role, her use of social media to tackle social justice issues, and for having some much more famous friends, but 99% of her fanbase is still made up of the geek demo.
